singles, looking to mingles

all right friendlies, this is out now. available from Spirit of Orr. That cover image is from Jake’s old (now Bela’s) garage on Dodridge behind the plasma center, where we used to bash it out around the turn of the century. We hope you enjoy. We’re quite happy with how this holds up, but we won’t be playing any kind of release show for this. Those were different times. Notes from Ron below.

broken horses

MOVIOLA Broken Horses (Early Rarities) CDR (SO66r) limited to 300.
Anyone following along with the trajectory of the Spirit of Orr ‘scene’ is already deeply and keenly aware of the vital role our friends MOVIOLA play in the puzzle. Any methods that result in uncovering truthful moments and in turn inspire the listener to uncover the same for themselves, are methods hard found and precious. This is what we champion, and Moviola was among the earliest and most dependable creators. These tracks (23 of them) collect many of the highlights of the harder to get material by MOVIOLA, mainly recorded in the later years of the 20th century. At 23 tracks this album does not in any way serve as a complete guide to their non-album output during this period. You would be likely to estimate that this is roughly one-third of material that has never appeared on CD previously. What we all do (finally… this first collection has been an 8 year wait) get here certainly does serve as almost a missing album, a lost album if you will. — Ron Schneiderman, Brattleboro, VT, January 2008

He can stand up straight, and drink his body weight

Things have been laying low in Moviola-land of late, woodshed phase, for every peak must have a valley, if you like, but as noted down below here, a cluster of early songs of ours from singles, comps, and abandon reels of tape is coming out on the fine Spirit of Orr imprint sometime in Jan/Feb 08. It’s nice to hear these songs again, as they all rush good images and thoughts to our brains. Our kemosabe Ron House forwarded along his take:

Moviola – Broken Horses (early rarities)

This record sounds like people finally getting to do what they want. It’s a late night with the ones you want to be with. After a long dialogue on The Simpsons or God, the instruments are assumed, pipes are fired up,and whatever powers there are are summoned and glow. The influences don’t press heavily;the Moviola idea is not asked to be more than it is, essentially a rustic indy rock band unique in the way the spotlight is shared amongst members. The song “Broken Horses” is excruciatingly nostalgic for me because I remember how I thought it truly nudged Civilization forward. But that didn’t really happen. We are happy now with our families and Power Tools. But at 1AM once something happened that is still inexplicable.

On to “Broken Horses”

Now that Dead Knowledge is out and available, it’s time to start thinking about the next project.
“Broken Horses” will be a compilation of early 7″ releases, unreleased tracks, and a few gems that were featured on compilation CDs.

Here are some 7″ covers to get the walk down memory lane juices flowin’

Uncovering Covers

Over the winter Jake set about to uncover unreleased and forgotten Moviola tracks. He remastered plenty, and there’s a forthcoming CD-R (working title: “Broken Horses”) to be released sometime this Summer on Spirit of Orr.

One that may not make the cut is a favorite of mine we recorded at some point during our tenure at the “warehouse.” While it’s not a Moviola song, I think we put our stamp on it… for better or worse. You be the judge.

Dead Knowledge iz coming

While it’s nothing approaching the Murdoch-owned lameness that is a myspace page, consider this locale to be Moviola HQ for the near term. Random postings on a new Moviola record coming out on Catbird Records in May ’07 (Dead Knowledge), and soon after that, another new platter of singles/rarities from the catacombs out on Spirit of Orr (Broken Horses).
